KEEO
In the story Friends of the Forest, Keeo is the biggest beaver in the pond. One day during a storm, he is struck by a
bolt of lightning which turns him into a silver beaver. He finds he is able to talk in human language
and the other beavers decide it is up to Keeo to talk to their
human friends on behalf of all beavers.
In the colony, Keeo
wears his Cub uniform with a silver scarf that has on its back the Keeo crest, the symbol of his connection with the beaver
program.
Usually an older cub, Keeo is part of the leadership team. He attends program planning and sharing
sessions, and takes and active part in colony meetings.
Keeo is a valuable part of the
leadership team for a number of important reasons;
- He is closer
to the age of the beavers and sometimes can see
things
from their point of view more easily than can adult
leaders.
- Sometimes
beavers with problems prefer to talk to Keeo who is
an
older child and a friend.
- He is a link
between the Beaver program and the Cub program.
- He can
inform cub leaders about the beaver program and beaver
leaders
about the cub program.
- He helps
introduce Cubbing to the beavers and helps make the
transition easier for them.
- He
participates in the swimming - up ceremony and escorts the
beavers
up the river to the cubs.
- Keeo is an example of what each beaver can become as he
grows
cub.
Once a Keeo has been
selected, have a leader spend time with him to inform him about the beaver
program, his duties the types of crafts, games and songs used in the program,
and anything else which will be of help to him.
Be sure to give the Cub a copy of the Keeo
handbook. It explains the Keeo's role and gives further ideas and guidelines.
In most cases, Keeo remains
with the colony for one year, but this isn't a hard and fast rule. The Cub may not work out well, or may find he
can't manage the time because of other activities. Make the arrangements
flexible enough to suit the circumstances.
KEEO' S
1. WHO IS
KEEO?
Keeo Is a Cub. He
may have been a Beaver himself. He shows
leadership skills and should take an active part working with the adult members
of the leadership team.
2. WHO
CHOOSES KEEO?
Communications between the Beaver leaders and Cub
leaders is essential. The Cub leader
needs to know the characteristics that you find desirable. The Cub leader should suggest several names
for Beaver leaders to look at. The final decision should rest with the Beaver
leaders. Leaders' sons do not always make the best Keeo.
3. DOES KEEO
HAVE ANY SPECIAL IDENTIFICATION?
After Keeo has attended a
few Beaver meetings, he should be treated to an investiture ceremony. At this time, he should be presented with a Keeo scarf. A
silver/grey scarf with a Keeo badge at the point,
works well. This scarf is only to be
worn at Beaver meetings.
4. WHAT
CHARACTERISTICS ARE DESIRABLE IN A KEEO?
He needs to remember that he Is
a Cub, and that his first responsibilities are to his pack. Keeo needs to be a
kind, caring Cub. He needs to realize
that as he attends the Beaver meeting, he is a role-model of the appropriate behaviour, as well as a peer counsellor. He should be comfortable speaking to the
colony about Cub programming. He should display leadership skills in games,
songs, etc.
5. WHAT DOES
KEEO DO?
Keeo is a member of the leadership team, and should take
an active part in all areas of the program.
He should be encouraged to lead appropriate games and songs. He needs to understand that Cub games and
songs are not for Beavers. In craft
time, he must understand that it is more important for him to see that every
Beaver finishes his own craft, before Keeo does a
craft himself. An alternative,
would be for Keeo to make his craft before the
meeting and use it as a sample.
6. HOW LONG
WOULD A CUB STAY IN THE ROLE OF KEEO?
For good communications between Beavers and Keeo, It is encouraged that an average term of one year is
a fair time -commitment for a Keeo.
SELECTING A KEEO
If there is a cub pack in your area, discuss the
situation with the cub leaders and the cub's parents or guardians. Explain the role of Keeo
and invite them to visit one of your colony meetings to see where Keeo fits in. The
cub leaders know their cubs and will be able to help you find a cub with the
necessary qualities. What you want is a
cub who is;
_ Warm and friendly and able
to get along with beaver aged children.
_ Responsible
and able to set a good example.
_ Able to
work and communicate with others.
_ Mature enough to work as a
young leader rather than an old beaver.
_ Able to
gain satisfaction through giving as well as getting.
_ Capable of
helping with activities.
WORKING WITH KEEO
WHAT IS KEEO?
In the story "Friends of the Forest" we are
told that Keeo is an older Beaver who has for some
reason become restless in the Colony. He is struck by lightning during a storm
and is transformed. When he looks at himself after being struck he sees that
his fur is now SILVER, but more importantly he is now able to think like and
speak to humans. When the other Beavers learn of his new capabilities they ask
him to act as their "spokes person" when they want to communicate
with the humans.
In the Colony Keeo is a Cub
who is a member of the Leadership Team and functions as a liaison between the
Beavers and Colony Leaders, and the Pack and Colony.
WHAT IS KEEO=S ROLE?
Keeo is a member of the Leadership Team - because of his
age lie may be able to relate to the Beavers more closely than some of the
adult leaders. Because Keeo sees your program through
the eyes of a child his suggestions and input are particularly important to
your program. Keeo is a Cub, an experienced Beaver, a
role model, a student and a friend.
WHAT ARE KEEO=S DUTIES AND SKILLS?
Keeo can lead games, read stories, teach and lead songs,
help with crafts, set up activities, work with White Tails in helping to
prepare them for their move to Cubs, help younger Beavers with more difficult
tasks, assist exceptional children, and help leaders to understand whit the
Beavers want to do in the program. Keeo has knowledge of and experience in outdoor activities
and nature.
GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING A KEEO.
Talk to the leader in the Cub Pack.
_ Ask them to recommend
several interested youths.
_ Visit the Pack and observe
the people who have been recommended. Choose the person(s) who you feel is best
suited to the needs of the Colony.
_ Specific
needs such as exceptional children.
_ Do you need more than one Keeo.
In most cases you will have one Keeo
in the Colony who will be a member of the leadership team for one Beaver year.
However some Colonies vary the length of titne from
perhaps one month to six months etc.
Some Colonies may need the help of more than one Keeo (in the case of special needs for example). This is
acceptable as long as the Keeos are comfortable with
the arrangement
TRAINING
Types of training for Keeo
include.' Keeo Workshops, On-the-job training from
other leaders, and specialty courses such as craft
workshops. Your Leadership Team should encourage Keeo
to take training and develop his leadership skills just as the rest of your
team does.
Remember Keeo is a member
of the Leadership Team
Include him/her in planning sessions
Make sure he/she has something to do at each meeting
Listen to what Keeo has to say.

his Cub leaders about Beavers and the Beaver leaders about the Cub program.

escorts the Busy Beavers up the river to the Cub Pack.
_ Keeo introduces the Busy Beavers (seven year olds) to Cubbing in order to make their transition from Colony to
Pack easier.
_ Keeo sets an example of what each Beaver can become as he
grows; a Cub and later a Scout. Keeo understands and lives up to the Beaver Promise and Law
but with a deeper understanding than the Beavers.
_ Keeo is a link with Beavers and Cubs at joint functions,
such as a Christmas Party, a Picnic or other Group Outings.
